You can blame it on the economy or the fact that Americans love a good Cinderella story, but it seems that there are more and more reality shows focused on turning junk into cash. It all started with “Antiques Roadshow” and exploded into a multi-channel love affair with the hunt for rusty gold. Shows like “American Pickers,” “Pawn Stars,” “Auction Hunters” and now “Storage Wars” follow ordinary joes as they try to make money on other people’s castoff stuff.

In “Storage Wars” four men make bids on defaulted storage lockers, then try to resell the contents in order to make money. The show started in the fall and has raked in millions of viewers. According to the website StorageUnitAuctionList.com, they have seen a huge increase in interest because of the TV show. Some bidders are thrift stores looking for inventory. Others are couples looking to supplement their incomes. “We started compiling auction lists last year”, Maddison Lake, President and creator of StorageUnitAuctionList.com said in a press release, “since then we have had a 3,000% increase in subscribers, mainly new, curious people that have seen the success of the characters on A&E’s Storage Wars. We yield hundreds of phone calls per day with people wanting to know how they can make a quick buck buying a storage unit and selling on websites such as Craigslist or eBay.”

So how do you successfully turn a defunct storage unit into a pile of cash? One of the stars of Storage Wars says the more dust the better. “If there are a lot of footprints and the dust is all moved and everything, that tells me that someone had been going in and out of there and maybe they were using it as sub-storage,” Storage Wars star Darrell Sheets told TVSquad.com. “If it’s all boxed up and dusty and all the furniture is wrapped up, you can tell no one has been there in a long time.” And that could mean there’s a hidden treasure there waiting to be found.
